Tarot Questions for Guidance and Reflection
A single-card spread is a simple way to spend a little time with tarot. You choose a question, draw one card, and see what it brings to your attention.
Perhaps youโd like some guidance for the day, or thereโs something on your mind that youโd like to understand better. Itโs also a lovely place to start if youโre getting to know your deck, as you can spend time with each card and explore its meaning.
The questions below give you a few starting points. Choose one that speaks to what you need today, or change the wording to make it your own.
How to Use a Single-Card Spread
- Choose a question. Think about what youโd like a little guidance on. A simple, focused question works well.
- Shuffle and draw one card. Keep your question in mind as you shuffle, then pull a card when youโre ready.
- Take a look at the image. What catches your eye first? It might be a person, a colour, or a small detail you havenโt noticed before.
- Connect it with your question. Read about the cardโs meaning if youโd like, then think about how it might relate to whatโs happening in your life.
- See what you take from it. You might come away with a new thought, something to reflect on, or an idea youโd like to try.
Questions beginning with โWhatโ or โHowโ usually give you plenty to work with. For example, โWhat could help me with this?โ leaves room to explore the card and consider what feels relevant.
Each prompt below is for its own one-card reading. Just pick one to begin.

- What am I overlooking in this situation?
- Whatโs influencing how I see this?
- What needs a closer look?
- Whatโs within my control here?
- What could help me understand this better?
Making a Choice or Finding a Next Step
Sometimes you have a few options in front of you. Other times, youโre simply wondering where to begin. These questions can help you think about what matters and what you could do next.
- What do I need to consider before deciding?
- What matters most to me in this choice?
- What could help me move forward?
- What might be holding me back?
- Whatโs one useful step I can take?
Personal Reflection
You can also use a single card to check in with yourself. These questions invite you to spend a little time with how youโre feeling and what you might need.
- What feeling needs my attention?
- What can I give myself credit for?
- What habit would I like to understand better?
- What do I need more of at the moment?
- What am I ready to let go of?
Example of a Single Card Reading
Letโs say you ask โWhat needs my attention today?โ and draw the Eight of Pentacles.
This card is often linked with learning, practice, and taking care over your work. You might think about something youโre trying to improve, or a task that would benefit from a little more time and attention.
Perhaps youโve been rushing through something because you want it finished. Or youโve been learning a new skill and feeling impatient with your progress. The card could be a reminder to slow down, practise, and give yourself time to learn.
For today, that might mean setting aside half an hour for something youโd like to get better at, or giving one unfinished task your full attention.
The same card could lead to a different reflection on another day. Your question and whatโs happening around you help you understand how its meaning might apply.
After Your Reading
You might like to jot down your question, the card you pulled, and a few thoughts. Even a sentence or two can give you something to come back to.
If youโve pulled a card for the day, take another look in the evening. Does anything about it make more sense now? You may notice a connection you hadnโt thought of when you first drew it.
