Three-Card Career Tarot Spread

Three-Card Career Tarot Spread

A three-card career spread looks at your current work situation, what you can build on, and a useful next step. You can use it to think about your role, your job search, or something you’d like to develop.

When to Use This Spread

Try this spread when:

  • You want to understand what’s working well in your current role.
  • You’re ready for more responsibility or independence.
  • You’re deciding which skill or interest to develop.
  • You’re considering a change and want to think about where to begin.

How to Use the Spread

Choose a work question, such as “What would help me develop in my work?”

Shuffle your deck with that question in mind, then draw three cards and place them in a row from left to right:

  1. Your current work situation
  2. What you can build on
  3. A useful next step

You could also ask:

  • What needs my attention at work?
  • How can I make better use of my skills?
  • What could help me approach my job search?
  • How can I take more ownership of my work?

What Each Position Means

1. Your Current Work Situation

The first card reflects an aspect of your working life at the moment. It might relate to your responsibilities, how you’re feeling about the work, or the people you work with.

Connect it with something specific you’ve noticed. Perhaps you’re enjoying learning, finding a task repetitive, or spending more time helping others than doing your own work.

2. What You Can Build On

The second card points to something that could support your progress. This might be a skill, experience you’ve gained, a personal strength, or a helpful working relationship.

Think about where you already use the quality shown in the card. There may be something you’re comfortable doing that you’d like to use more often.

3. A Useful Next Step

The final card suggests an action or approach to consider. It could involve asking a question, practising a skill, proposing a change, or finding out more about a role that interests you.

Relate it to the first two cards so the step makes sense for your situation. If the reading highlights a skill you’ve been enjoying, for example, you could look for an opportunity to use it in a different task.

Example Reading

Question: How can I take more ownership of my work?

Card 1: Eight of Pentacles — Your Current Work Situation

The Eight of Pentacles suggests work that involves skill, practice, and attention to detail. You may enjoy the tasks themselves and have become good at them, while wanting more say in how the work is done.

Card 2: Queen of Wands — What You Can Build On

The Queen of Wands points to confidence, enthusiasm, and initiative. You might already have ideas about how to improve something, or enjoy taking the lead when you know a subject well.

Card 3: Ace of Swords — A Useful Next Step

The Ace of Swords suggests clarity and direct communication. It could encourage you to explain what you’d like to take responsibility for and put forward a specific proposal.

Reading the Cards Together

You may enjoy your work and feel ready to make more decisions about it. You know it well enough to suggest improvements, so a useful next step could be to explain what you’d like to take on. For example, you could choose a small project or recurring task you’d like to manage. Discuss which decisions you could make yourself, what the expected result would be, and when you’d check in with your manager. That makes the request more concrete than simply asking for more independence.

After Your Reading

Note down what the cards brought to your attention and an action you’d like to consider.

If you need more information before taking that step, write down what you need to find out and who could help.
