A three-card letting go spread looks at what you’re holding on to, what makes it difficult to let go, and what could help.
You can use it when you’re ready to move on from something but still feel attached to it. That might be a relationship that’s ended, a plan you’ve outgrown, or an expectation you keep trying to meet.
When to Use This Spread
Try this spread when:
- You keep returning to a disappointment or an unfinished plan.
- You’re ready to change a habit but find yourself falling back into it.
- You want to step away from a role or responsibility you’ve taken on.
- You’ve decided to move on and would like to understand what’s making it difficult.
How to Use the Spread
Choose something you’d like to let go of and ask “What could help me let go of this?”
Shuffle your deck with that question in mind, then draw three cards and place them in a row from left to right:
- What you’re holding on to
- What makes letting go difficult
- What could help
You could also ask:
- What keeps drawing me back to this?
- What do I need to understand about my attachment to this situation?
- What would help me move on from this disappointment?
What Each Position Means
1. What You’re Holding On To
The first card helps you look more closely at the attachment. It might relate to a person or situation, or to what you hoped would come from it.
For example, you may be holding on to the hope that a plan will eventually work, the comfort of a familiar routine, or the feeling of being needed.
2. What Makes Letting Go Difficult
The second card looks at why the attachment is hard to change. It may suggest uncertainty about what comes next, disappointment about how things turned out, or concern about losing something important.
Think about what continuing gives you, even if part of you wants to stop. There may be a need for reassurance, familiarity, or a sense that your effort has been worthwhile.
3. What Could Help
The final card suggests support or an approach that could make the change easier. It might point to a practical adjustment, a conversation, or something you’d like to give more of your attention to.
Connect it with the difficulty shown in card two. If uncertainty is keeping you attached, for example, the helpful step might involve finding out more about your alternatives.
Example Reading
Question: What would help me let go of a project I no longer enjoy?
Card 1: Seven of Pentacles — What You’re Holding On To
The Seven of Pentacles may point to the time and effort you’ve already invested. Perhaps you’ve kept working on the project because you want to see a result, or because stopping would leave you wondering what all that work was for.
Card 2: Four of Pentacles — What Makes Letting Go Difficult
The Four of Pentacles suggests a wish to keep hold of what you’ve built. Putting the project aside may feel like losing your progress, even though you no longer enjoy continuing with it.
Card 3: Page of Wands — What Could Help
The Page of Wands encourages curiosity and trying something new. You might benefit from spending an afternoon on an interest you’ve been putting off, without committing to another big project.
Reading the Cards Together
This reading could describe continuing with a project because you’ve already put so much into it. The thought of leaving it unfinished makes it hard to stop, while another interest gives you a reason to do something different. You could save your notes, photograph what you’ve made, or keep the parts you’d like to use again. Then put the project aside and try the activity you’re curious about.
After Your Reading
Write down what you recognised in the cards and one thing you’d like to try.
