Three-Card Relationship Tarot Spread

Three-card relationship tarot spread

A three-card relationship spread looks at your part in a relationship, the connection between you, and what needs attention.

You can use it for a romantic relationship, a friendship, or a family connection. It’s helpful when you’d like to understand how things are going, especially if something has changed or you’ve been finding it difficult to get along.

When to Use This Spread

Try this spread when:

  • You feel out of step with someone.
  • The same disagreement or misunderstanding keeps coming up.
  • Your relationship has changed, and you’re adjusting to it.
  • You’d like to give a relationship some attention, even when things are going well.

How to Use the Spread

Choose one relationship and ask a question such as โ€œWhat needs attention in my relationship with this person?โ€

Shuffle your deck with that question in mind, then draw three cards and place them in a row from left to right:

  1. You
  2. The connection
  3. What needs attention

You could also ask:

  • What do I need to understand about this connection?
  • How can I look after this friendship?
  • How can I approach our relationship at the moment?

What Each Position Means

1. You

The first card focuses on what you’re bringing to the relationship. It might reflect your feelings, expectations, or the way you’ve been behaving.

Consider how the card relates to your recent experience. Have you been making an effort to connect, waiting for reassurance, keeping your distance, or taking on more than you can manage?

2. The Connection

The second card looks at the relationship between you. It may suggest something you share, a pattern in how you interact, or the circumstances affecting your time together.

Relate it to what you’ve noticed between you, such as how you communicate, make plans, support each other, or handle disagreements.

3. What Needs Attention

The final card highlights an aspect of the relationship that would benefit from some care. This could be a conversation you’ve been avoiding, a need for clearer boundaries, or simply making time for each other.

It can also point to something worth continuing, such as showing appreciation or working together on a shared goal.

Example Reading

Question: What needs attention in this friendship?

Card 1: Page of Cups โ€” You

The Page of Cups may reflect a wish to reach out or express something you haven’t said. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about your friend and would like to reconnect, but feel a little unsure about making the first move.

Card 2: Six of Cups โ€” The Connection

The Six of Cups points to old friendships and shared memories. This could be a friendship with plenty of memories behind it, where much of your connection comes from what you’ve experienced together.

Card 3: Two of Pentacles โ€” What Needs Attention

The Two of Pentacles draws attention to competing responsibilities and finding a workable balance. Making time for the friendship may take more planning now, especially if your routines have changed.

Reading the Cards Together

One way to read these cards is that you’d like to reconnect with an old friend, while the practical side of staying in touch needs some thought.

You might send a message about a memory you share and suggest a specific day to meet.

That also gives you a chance to find out what works for your friend now. A shorter visit or an occasional call might be easier to arrange than the way you used to spend time together.

After Your Reading

If you’d like, write down the cards and how they relate to what you’ve experienced in the relationship.

You might finish with one thing you’d like to do, something you’d like to understand better, or a question you’d like to ask the other person.
